The Cuban Sandwich
The Cuban Sandwich is a favored delight in South Florida. This tasty meal is also known as a Cubano and has been around the South Florida area since Cuban people settled since early in the 20th century. These delicious, toasted Cuban sandwiches are a favorite meal for many. These delights can be found in numerous restaurants especially in Tampa and Miami, Florida. This sandwich is a Cuban version of a submarine sandwich.
There are many versions of the origin of the Cuban sandwich. And every aficionado believes in their version of the Cuban sandwich is the best. There are many debates in the South Florida area as to the components of the sandwich. Your visit to Tampa or Miami would not be complete without a sampling of this famous sandwich
Cuban bread is relatively straightforward white bread, similar to Italian bread and like French bread. Cuban bread has a slightly different baking method and ingredient list (including lard or vegetable shortening). The bread is usually made in long loaves and resembles French bread. Cuban sandwiches are considered a staple of Cuban-American cuisine. A sandwich press is essential, as the key to a great Cuban sandwich lies in the grilling of the bread. The ingredients traditional to these sandwiches are layers of roast pork, ham, cheese, and a pickle. Cuban sandwiches are then grilled until the ham, pork, and pickles are warm. One of the biggest mistakes in making a Cuban sandwich preparation is a press that is too light. Pressing plus keeping the ingredients together while still achieving the desired crunch crust is an art. Additional items
that can be added are: mayonnaise, lettuce, onions, bell peppers, and or tomatoes. Cuban sandwiches are served hot, pressed, cold or room temperature.
One loaf Cuban bread
Prepared yellow mustard
1/2 pound baked ham, thinly sliced
1/2 pound roasted pork, thinly sliced
Eight dill pickle slices
1/2 pound Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
* Italian or French bread may be substituted.
Slice the bread. Spread a layer of mustard on bread. Arrange the meat (ham and pork), pickle slices, and Swiss cheese evenly over the bread. Cover the sandwiches with the top halves of the bread. Cut into four sandwiches.
Sandwich Press: Grill sandwiches on a hot lightly buttered sandwich press until flat, the bread has browned, and cheese is melted. Remove the bread from the heat and cut each sandwich in half (at a diagonal). Serve immediately.
Waffle Iron: Turn metal plates to the flat surface. Place sandwich in hot lightly buttered waffle iron, close cover, and grill for 3 minutes on each side.
Griddle or Frying Pan: Place the sandwich on a hot griddle or frying pan, and position a heavy iron skillet on top. Flatten the sandwich. Grill the sandwich for 2 to 3 minutes on each side.
